PITTSBURGH (March 28, 2017) – Pittsburgh Riverhounds forward Corey Hertzog has been named the USL Player of the Week following an outstanding two-goal performance to kick off the 2017 season this past Saturday against reigning league champion New York Red Bulls II.
Reported by the League, Hertzog received 42 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market.
The Reading, Pennsylvania native’s season debut included the late equalizer to make the score 3-3 in the 81st minute and secure a point for the Hounds. He currently shares the league-lead in goals scored with three other players following opening weekend.
Joining the Hounds prior to the 2016 season from the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Hertzog has racked up 15 goals in 31 matches with Pittsburgh – good enough to move him into a three-way tie for eighth all-time in club history in goals scored with Said Ali and Gary DePalma.
Hertzog’s latest showing also continues what has been hot stretch of recent play since the beginning of preseason this past February. He led the Hounds in goals during preseason play with four in six matches.
Additionally, Hertzog is the first Hounds player since midfielder Lebo Moloto during the final week of the 2015 regular season to be named the USL Player of the Week. The Hounds forward was also awarded Team of the Week honors in 2016 following a two-goal showing against Wilmington Hammerheads FC in August.
Hertzog and Pittsburgh (0-0-1) will look to stay hot on the offensive end this Saturday, as they host FC Cincinnati (0-1-0) at 5 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at www.riverhounds.com.
