PITTSBURGH (Sept. 19, 2023) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC midfielder Danny Griffin was selected to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 28, the league announced this afternoon.
Griffin turned in an outstanding two-way performance in the Hounds’ 2-1 win at Miami FC on Saturday, which kept the team alone atop the Eastern Conference standings. The midfielder connected on 64 of 70 passes for a team-leading 91.4 percent clip, and he was a perfect 6-for-6 on long passes.
Defensively, Griffin recovered possession 12 times for the Hounds and intercepted two passes, and to cap the night off, he sprinted to the goal line to track down the ball and set up Robbie Mertz for the game-winning goal in the 90th minute.
It the the first Team of the Week honor this season for Griffin, whose unmatched reliability has seen him play 112 consecutive league matches in four seasons as a pro. The Hounds have also had at least one player on the Team of the Week in four of the past six weeks, and they did not play a match in one of the weeks they were left out.
