RDA Weekend Recap – Sept. 25-26

Another ECNL weekend came to Montour Junction on Sept. 25-26, and it was Tennessee SC and FC Alliance, both out of the Volunteer State, who traveled north to be the opposition for the Riverhounds Development Academy.

Both Regional League teams in action got results to wrap up the weekend, and the 2009 RL Girls had a particularly good Sunday with a 6-1 win over FC Alliance. Quinn Miller scored a pair of goals, and Emerson Shine, Lauren Paugh, Addy Richardson and Alexa Yurko also had goals in a match where the Hounds ball movement showed much improvement, and the good passing led to good scoring chances.

The 2008 RL Girls just missed out on a win, as a late free kick goal gave FC Alliance a 2-2 draw. Chloe Karsman and Miladjia Pavlovich both scored on assists from Morgan Ferris, and Cianna Brockenback stood out along the back line for the Hounds.

The 2008 and 2009 Girls both battled hard to get a result from the weekend after Tennessee SC swept the Saturday matches, but both Hounds sides fought hard, only to fall by matching 1-0 scores to FC Alliance.

The weekend also saw the Hounds take two of three Great Lakes Alliance matches played on a light weekend.

The 2010 RDA II Girls got a pair of goals by Alexa Pealer — one just 15 seconds into the match — and one by Ellie Powers to win their season debut 3-1 over North FC. The 2011 Boys also got an opening-minute goal and made the lead stand up for a 5-4 win over Force Blue. Keller Gilson netted four goals and an assist, and Emi Vasquez Perez had a goal and an assist in the victory.

Dixon scores late as Hounds, Battery play end-to-end 3-3 draw

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 25, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC got a late Alex Dixon goal to level the scores, and the Hounds and Charleston Battery played out a thrilling 3-3 draw Saturday night at Highmark Stadium.

Dixon’s volley in the 87th minute, set up by an overhead kick assist from Tommy Williamson, spared the Hounds (14-7-6) from defeat after letting a 2-0 lead slip away. Todd Wharton and Shane Wiedt scored the first two goals for the Hounds.

Charleston (8-9-7) made their comeback with a goal by Leland Archer and two in the second half by Claudio Repetto to take a 3-2 lead with nine minutes to play.

First half

The Hounds came out on the front foot and grabbed a lead just six minutes into the game. Russell Cicerone hit a low, diagonal cross from the right wing that made it all the way across to Wharton on the back post for the finish, his third goal of the season.

Cicerone, the Hounds’ leading scorer, played helper again on the Hounds’ second goal in the 27th minute. Kenardo Forbes hit a corner kick beyond the back post, and with little angle to go for goal, Cicerone wisely headed the ball back across goal, where center back Wiedt was waiting to head in his first goal with the Hounds.

But Charleston came right back with a corner kick of their own in the 35th minute, as Archer beat the Hounds to the near post and powerfully headed a Robbie Crawford corner in on the short side of goalkeeper Danny Vitiello.

Second half

Another set-piece goal from the Battery tied the match in the 68th minute, as Repetto got on the end of an Angelo Kelly-Rosales free kick to level the score with a back-post header.

Then, in the 81st minute, Repetto put the Battery ahead with a nice finish from the center of the penalty area after some good ball movement by the Battery — one of the few times the Hounds were broken down in the run of play.

The Charleston lead lasted just six minutes, though, as Williamson made a run down the right channel to receive a through ball from the back. The ball hopped up on the first-year forward, and he opted for the quick pass over his own head. The pass hit Dixon in stride, and the veteran stroked home his ninth goal of the season, sending the briefly quieted crowd of 3,529 into celebration.

The Hounds nearly stole a late winner, as a close-range header by Anthony Velarde was saved by Charleston’s Joe Kuzminsky, and Dixon dragged an open stoppage-time shot just wide of the goal.

The game’s final sequence was a wild one, as Tom Judge had an open look at the net, only to have his header blocked in desperation by Archer. The Battery quickly countered, and only a sliding block by Ezra Armstrong for the last touch of the game prevented Charleston from a potential winning goal on the other end.

Hounds Man of the Match

Todd Wharton scored the opening goal playing in a higher-than-usual position on the field, but his contributions shone in other areas. He combined with Dixon and Cicerone to provide good pressure on the Charleston defense, causing multiple turnovers in their own end. Wharton also completed 27 of 31 passes (a team-high 87.1 percent), shared the team lead in tackles with four and added two clearances.

What’s next?

The battle for home field in the playoffs comes to a head the next three weeks, beginning with the second-place Hounds’ first-ever road trip to Miami, where they will face third-place Miami FC (12-7-6) at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday. Miami was hosting Loudoun United tonight in a game delayed by weather.

900 and counting: A look back at Hounds' milestone goals

When Tommy Williamson touched home his fifth goal of the season shortly after coming off the bench against Loudoun United on Sept. 11, it might not have seemed like a major moment considering it was the fourth goal as the Hounds were cruising to a 5-0 win.

A quick count through the annals of team history revealed that it did have a small piece of significance: It was the 900th competitive goal scored by the Riverhounds.

As the team prepares to host the Charleston Battery at 7 p.m. Saturday — a battle between the two remaining USL Championship clubs that have been around since the 1990s — the timing seems right to glance backward at names and games connected to the other milestone goals in Hounds history, both memorable and obscure.

(Editor’s note: The 900 goals in question include all competitive goals for the team: Regular season, Playoffs and Cup. Goals scored in preseason or friendly matches do not count, so while the Jose Angulo rocket to take a 1-0 lead over FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic remains one of the Hounds’ great goals, it does not count for record-keeping purposes.)

• The very first goal in Riverhounds history came 30 minutes into the team’s May 1, 1999 inaugural match against the Cincinnati Riverhawks, as Emil Haitonic put the Hounds ahead 1-0. While it got the packed house at Bethel Park High School celebrating, the match would end with the Hounds losing on penalties (all tied A-League matches went to a shootout in 1999) after a 2-2 draw.

It would be the only goal scored for the Hounds by Haitonic, who came to the U.S. after five seasons with CFR Cluj, one of the top clubs in his native Romania. Haitonic later played for the Riverhawks and still coaches youth teams in Ohio.

• Late in the next season, the Hounds hit the century mark through the team’s all-time leading scorer, club Hall-of-Famer David Flavius.

Flavius, another Hounds alum now coaching youth players locally, netted the team’s 100th goal on Aug. 5, 2000. Coincidentally, it again came at Bethel Park against the Cincinnati Riverhawks, but this time, the opening goal in the 27th minute was part of a triumphant effort, as the Hounds won 2-1.

• Through the team’s nomadic first decade and change, the Hounds would accumulate 494 goals. Then came the opening of Highmark Stadium in 2013, giving the club a permanent home.

Little more than a month after the opening of Highmark, the team’s 500th goal was struck May 14, 2013, in a game more affectionately remembered by the fans in attendance than the players involved.

On that night, in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Hounds struggled against Chicago amateur side RWB Adria and trailed at halftime. Goal No. 500 was the equalizer, scored in the 53rd minute by Seth C’deBaca, and it was enough to force extra time, a 1-1 draw, and, eventually, a penalty shootout won by the Hounds despite the best efforts of newfound fan favorite Igor Dimov in the Adria goal.

Goal scorer C’deBaca spent four seasons with the Hounds, but the 500th goal in team history, while important, would be his last.

• No. 600 came two seasons later in a game die-hard Hounds fans will remember by the date: May 30, 2015.

That game, of course, was the Miracle on the Mon, the remarkable 6-5 comeback win over the Harrisburg City Islanders that helped propel the 2015 side to arguably the Hounds’ best season in a decade.

While the lasting image from that match is the celebration around a shirtless Kevin Kerr after the winning goal — the second scored in stoppage time — the milestone goal was the 90th-minute strike that cut what was once a 3-0 deficit to 5-4, and it was a left-footed laser off the boot of Danny Earls that was so good the TV cameras on the match couldn’t keep up with it!

It was Earls’ second goal of the match, the first being No. 599 on the rebound of a Kerr penalty save by Nick Noble, and it certainly goes down as an unforgettable, albeit poorly documented goal.

• Goals No. 700 and 800 are linked, as they both came courtesy of another of the club’s top goal scorers in history Neco Brett.

The goals are rife with coincidence, as both goals were the second goal scored in an eventual 4-0 Hounds win over Canadian opposition; the first came April 7, 2018 against Toronto FC II, the second on Aug. 30, 2019 at TD Place Stadium against the Ottawa Fury.

Neither match was particularly memorable for its play, though the Toronto win had a few other milestones and quirks.

For one, the match was moved to Highmark from BMO Field because of an unplayable surface in Toronto after a midweek CONCACAF Champions League match. Brett also scored goals 699 and 701 in team history for his first career hat trick in the win, which was the first win as Hounds coach for Bob Lilley after two draws to start the season.

• That brings us to Williamson’s goal two weeks ago.

As with Brett’s two club milestones, the game won’t be particularly memorable because of its lopsided nature. Kenardo Forbes wrapped up the scoring two minutes later — Hounds goal No. 901 — which begs the question: How long until the Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ 1,000th goal?

Assuming the USL Championship sticks to a 32- or 34-game schedule, along playoff matches and the return of the U.S. Open Cup, it’s reasonable to assume the Hounds will score anywhere between 45 and 70 goals. That, plus a few more this season, means that sometime in the 2023 campaign, we should see goal No. 1,000 in team history.

Oct. 10 match vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies to kick off at 6 p.m.

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 24, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s match on Sunday, Oct. 10 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies will be a 6 p.m. kickoff at Highmark Stadium, the team announced this afternoon. The match will be aired on 22 The Point (WPNT-22) and streamed via ESPN+.

The showdown between the top two teams in the Atlantic Division will have major implications for seeding and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, as the first-place Rowdies (17-6-1) and the second-place Hounds (14-7-5) meet for the fourth time this season.

The match will also decide the season series between the two clubs, as they split two matches earlier in the season in St. Petersburg, Fla., before playing to a scoreless draw in their last meeting, Aug. 18 at Highmark Stadium.

Game at Miami FC moved up to Saturday, Oct. 16

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 22, 2021) — The final USL Championship meeting of the season between Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Miami FC has been moved forward one day to Saturday, Oct. 16, the league announced this morning.

The match, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 17, will remain a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami, and it will be televised on 22 The Point and streamed via ESPN+.

The Hounds (14-7-5) and Miami FC (12-6-6) are locked in a tight battle to claim a home playoff game coming out of the Atlantic Division. The teams are scheduled to meet twice more, including the Hounds’ first-ever trip to Miami’s home on the campus of Florida International University on Oct. 2.

The move means that five of the Hounds’ final six games of the regular season will be on Saturday nights, the lone exception being the home match Sunday, Oct. 10 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Unbeaten run ended by late Charlotte goal; Hounds fall 1-0

(Sept. 18, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC had its unbeaten run ended at six games by the Charlotte Independence, who got an 81st-minute goal by Irvin Parra to grab a 1-0 win Saturday night at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

Parra, the leading scorer for the Independence (11-8-4) with 10 on the season, finished after being played behind the defense on a pass from Valentin Sabella. The Independence ended up outshooting the Hounds (14-7-5) in the game, 11-9.

Hounds goalkeeper Danny Vitiello finished with a season-high six saves in the loss, which included three in the opening 20 minutes to keep the Independence at bay.

First half

The start of the match was all Charlotte, as the Independence had two great chances in the first 10 minutes but missed wide on each.

Vitiello’s busy night began with a point-blank stop of in-form Charlotte forward Sylvain Marveaux in the 17th minute, and three minutes later, he stopped Enzo Martinez and Joel Johnson on one-on-one chances less than 45 seconds apart.

The Hounds produced almost no offense in the first 45 minutes, but from a late corner kick, the ball fell to Alex Dixon, who hammered a shot on goal through traffic, but right into the hands of Charlotte goalie Austin Pack.

Second half

The Hounds looked like a different team after the break, and they nearly opened the scoring in the 50th minute.

Good ball movement led to Todd Wharton receiving a pass behind the defense on the right side, which drew both defenders and Pack away from the front of goal. Wharton slipped a pass across to Hounds leading scorer Russell Cicerone, who had a mostly open net, but his shot was cleared away from the line by Johnson, the only Charlotte defender back.

Ezra Armstrong, making his third start of the season, had an open header at the back post on a corner kick five minutes later, but his effort went over the bar, leaving the game scoreless.

The game grew more open as time progressed, but finally Charlotte got the goal by creating a turnover near midfield and moving into transition for Sabella to push a pass for Parra into space behind the Hounds defense.

The Hounds had one late chance in stoppage time. Danny Griffin clipped a dangerous diagonal ball to the back post from the left side, setting up a scramble in front involving Cicerone and multiple defenders. Anthony Velarde got the last touch on the ball for the Hounds, but he couldn’t turn the half-chance toward goal, ending the threat.

Hounds Man of the Match

The Hounds, in a lackluster first half, easily could have trailed by multiple goals if not for the play of Danny Vitiello. His six saves are a season high, and even with one goal conceded, Vitiello’s goals-against average remains under 1.00 for the season.

What’s next?

The Charleston Battery make their first of two trips this season to Highmark Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 25. The Battery (8-8-5) fell to eight points out of the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division because of Charlotte’s win, while their Saturday match against Miami was in a lengthy weather delay.

3 Things: #CLTvPIT

The Hounds are on the road again, and no place has been harder for the team to win than Charlotte, N.C. But with a six-match unbeaten streak, something has to give when the Hounds face the Charlotte Independence at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Right around the same time the smooth sounds of Grammy-winner Gregory Porter will be coming from Highmark Stadium as part of the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, the Hounds will be taking the field at American Legion Memorial Stadium in hopes of making some noise of their own.

The Hounds are 0-5-2 all-time when facing the Independence on the road, and their last win in the city of Charlotte came way back on Aug. 29, 2014, 1-0 over the Charlotte Eagles, who were then coached by future Hounds boss Mark Steffens.

So while the sweetest sounds Saturday will be coming from our Highmark home, here are the 3 Things to look for as the Hounds try to silence the crowd in Charlotte.

1.) One? Oh.

The past four meetings between the two teams have ended with 1-0 scores, three of them in favor of the Independence, but each time the games have been vastly different.

This year, the Independence bunkered down with 10 men and held an early lead, the Hounds dominated but couldn’t find a second goal, and then the Independence had the better of play but sloppy weather kept scoring down. But the common thread to all three was, when a goal was scored, the team that conceded — whether through lack of will or lack of execution — never truly threatened to rally.

Regardless of which team gets the opening goal, the stakes in this match mean the conceding team’s coach will almost certainly implore his team to take risks and not let this one end as another 1-0 result. That could lead to more open play and chances on both ends, and whoever gets the second goal — either making it 2-0 or 1-1 — will have a major momentum boost.

2.) Packing it in

The Hounds are likely to see one of the team’s former goalkeepers, Austin Pack, for the second time this season in the Charlotte net.

Pack has shown himself as a capable fill-in for injured Brandon Miller over the past month, but the Hounds barely made him work in the previous meeting with only a single shot on net.

Charlotte is coming off back-to-back shutouts, but Pack hasn’t had the heaviest workload, needing to make just 10 saves while his team has gone 4-1-2 in the past seven matches. Whether they face Pack, a just-back-from-injury Miller or an untested third choice in net, shots on goal might be the biggest metric determining if this is a successful attacking night for the Hounds.

3.) Wings flying high

While the 5-0 rout over Loudoun last Saturday might not be a match to read too much into, one positive was the offensive spark provided by Ezra Armstrong, who recorded his first two assists in USL on the Hounds’ final two goals.

Armstrong did something Bob Lilley always wants to see from his outside midfielders and/or wing backs, making the overlapping run and creating havoc by getting to the goal line. While Alex Dixon has been consistently dangerous getting forward in that manner, the opposite wing hasn’t had a steady threat like that, despite both Dani Rovira and Todd Wharton having good moments in that role.

Armstrong has a little more pace than Rovira and Wharton, meaning he can be more dynamic, but he lacks the consistency and defensive responsibility of the other two. Still, if Armstrong can be a consistent attacking threat when he is deployed on the opposite side from Dixon, that will stretch and open defenses for players to flow through the middle and finish.

Preview: Riverhounds SC at Charlotte Independence

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 17, 2021) — After a road-heavy early portion of the schedule, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC makes one of its final road trips of the regular season to face the Charlotte Independence for a fourth and final time, 7 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The match will be shown on 22 The Point and on ESPN+.

The Hounds (14-6-5) visit only one other city the rest of the season — both of their road games over the final six weeks are in Miami — but this second trip to the Queen City is one of high importance for both teams.

As has been the story for at least six weeks, the Hounds are trying to keep pace with the Tampa Bay Rowdies atop the Atlantic Division, as neither team has lost in more than a month. Fourth-place Charlotte (10-8-4), on the other hand, has carved out a little separation ahead of Charleston and Hartford, and the Independence wants points to help grow that margin.

History has not been kind to the Hounds against Charlotte. The team’s 1-0 win on July 3 this season was its first in 13 tries against the Independence, and the Hounds are still 1-8-5 all-time against Saturday’s opponent, including an 0-5-2 mark on the road.

The last meeting between the teams was the fourth consecutive 1-0 match between the clubs, as Enzo Martinez’s goal gave the Independence the win in the first game between the clubs at Legion Memorial Stadium. That rainy night loss was the Hounds’ most recent defeat, as the team has gone 4-0-2 in six matches since then.

No new injuries have arisen for the Hounds, and defender Jalen Robinson returned to full participation in training this week, giving coach Bob Lilley a nearly full compliment of players. But with a full week off between matches for the second time in a row, expect to see most of the Hounds’ regulars in the starting lineup, including captain Kenardo Forbes, who is coming off a Team of the Week selection for his two-goal game in the 5-0 rout of Loudoun.

Charlotte, meanwhile, comes in as winners of two in a row against Loudoun and Hartford, and the team has showed no let-down in the back since former Hounds goalkeeper Austin Pack took over in net for the injured Brandon Miller, going 4-1-2 in their last seven, which includes the win last month over Pittsburgh.

RDA Weekend Recap – Sept. 11-12

After tournaments got the 2021-22 competitive season started, last weekend was the first foray into league play around the Riverhounds Development Academy, and things couldn’t have started much better for the young Hounds.

The 2008 and 2009 Boys got to play host to Michigander opposition for the first weekend of ECNL play, and both teams kicked off their Ohio Valley Conference schedules by taking maximum points.

The 09s’ very first ECNL experience Saturday was a convincing 10-0 victory over Vardar SC that was paced by a Warren Agostoni hat trick, two goals and three assists by Dylan Shallenberger and a clean sheet by Connor Hileger. The next day was a tougher challenge from the Michigan Wolves, but Agostoni and Shallenberger were joined on the score sheet by Cole Caledonia and Moses Perkovich for a 4-1 victory.

The 08 Boys experienced similar success, as they began the weekend with a 7-0 win over Vardar. Their second match was knotted up until five minutes remained, when Braylon Woods scored the go-ahead goal in a 3-1 win over the Michigan Wolves. Owen Shearer had the Hounds’ other two strikes Sunday.

The Hounds’ girls sides in ECNL action played just a single match Saturday in Buffalo against the Western New York Flash. The 09 Girls had to grind out a result in their first ECNL action to get a scoreless draw, while the 08 Girls couldn’t convert enough scoring chances in a 2-1 loss to the Flash.

The Regional League girls sides also played in Buffalo, with Miladija Pavlovich scoring both goals in a 2-1 win for the 08 RL side and Addy Richardson scoring for the 09 RL Girls in a 1-1 draw.

Forbes' goal-scoring double earns Team of the Week honor

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 14, 2021) — Fresh off his first two-goal game of the season, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC midfielder Kenardo Forbes was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 21, the league announced this afternoon.

Forbes, the Hounds captain, scored on a Goal of the Week candidate volley and later on a curling shot from distance that was the final goal in the team’s 5-0 win Saturday over Loudoun United FC. The multi-goal game was his second during his four seasons in Pittsburgh, having also scored twice in a 3-0 win over Indy Eleven on Sept. 28, 2019.

In addition to his scoring, Forbes won all five tackles and 7 of 8 duels during the match, and he added two key passes on the attack.

The goals also helped Forbes hit a club milestone. His leap to 53 points with the Hounds — 11 goals, 31 assists — propelled him into the club’s all-time top 10 in that category, going from 11th entering the game into a tie for eighth with Michael Apple (1999-2002).

It is the third time being named to the Team of the Week, presented by Cleer Audio, this season for Forbes. He also was named to the league’s best XI in Weeks 10 and 14.

The Hounds return to the field this Saturday, when they travel to face the Charlotte Independence at 7 p.m. at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The match will be shown on 22 The Point and ESPN+
