Hounds to host Rochester in U.S. Open Cup

PITTSBURGH (Feb. 17, 2023) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC has been drawn to host Rochester New York FC in the second round of the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced late Thursday.

The match will be played at Highmark Stadium in the round’s designated window, April 4-6, at a date and time to be finalized. It is the third straight edition of the cup that will see the Hounds begin at home against a lower-division opponent.

Rochester New York FC, is the sole independent team in third-tier MLS Next Pro, and they finished their first season in the new reserve league with a 10-8-6 record and a 2022 playoff appearance. The winner of the match advances to the third round, April 25-26, when MLS teams will enter the competition.

Pittsburgh and Rochester have a long soccer history dating back to the Hounds’ founding in 1999. The Hounds and the Rochester Rhinos met 46 times — more than any other opponent in Hounds history — combining their time together in the old A-League from 1999-2003 and more recently in the USL from 2011-17. The ties extend to the current Hounds, as head coach Bob Lilley, midfielder Kenardo Forbes and defender Joe Farrell all were part of the final Rhinos team in 2017, and Lilley and Forbes were part of the club’s 2015 USL Cup-winning side.

Hounds 2023 schedule announced

PITTSBURGH (Jan. 9, 2023) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will be bringing a jam-packed Summer of Soccer to Highmark Stadium with 10 home games from June through August in their 2023 USL Championship schedule announced this afternoon by the league.

The Hounds will play a 34-game league schedule for the second year in a row, beginning with the already-announced season opener Sat., March 11 at Birmingham Legion FC and ending Sat., Oct. 14 with the short road trip to face Detroit City FC. Those matches bookend a 17-game home slate and a full, balanced schedule that sees the team face every other team in the USL Championship for the first time since 2014.

After the Fri., March 24 home opener against Miami FC, the home games will pick up in pace as the weather gets warmer. Hounds fans will also be treated to a unique and varied promotional schedule, with giveaways, celebrity appearances and concessions deals — including the return of $1 beer days for select matches — to be announced at a later date.

On the field, the Summer of Soccer heats up to start June with a June 3 visit from frequent Western Conference frontrunner Phoenix Rising FC, which makes its first trip to the Steel City since 2014. Longtime rival Charleston Battery (June 10) and relative newcomers San Diego Loyal (June 24) keep the action going leading up to a rematch from last season’s playoffs and a shot at payback for the Hounds, a July 1 visit from Louisville City FC.

The Hounds have five total home matches in the month of July, including the start of a four-game homestand against all Eastern Conference foes from July 26-Aug. 12. And on the back end of the schedule, the Hounds will wrap up the regular season at Highmark Stadium with fall home games against New Mexico United (Sept. 23) and FC Tulsa (Sept. 30).

2023 home opener & season opener set

PITTSBURGH (Jan. 4, 2023) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will be back in front of its home crowd at Highmark Stadium with a special Friday night contest, as the team hosts Miami FC in their 2023 home opener on March 24, the USL Championship announced today as part of a league-wide opening-game reveal.

The Hounds’ first game in front of the home faithful falls in the third week of the USL Championship season, two weeks after the team will open its 2023 regular season on Saturday, March 11 with a road match at Birmingham Legion FC. That is a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Quarterfinal that saw the Hounds advance on penalty kicks at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

Those are the only two Hounds matches included in the league’s home opener announcement, and times for those games will be announced at a later date. The full 34-game USL Championship schedule is slated to be revealed this Monday, Jan. 9.

This year’s home opener against Miami will kick off the Hounds’ 11th season at Highmark Stadium — the team’s 24th season overall — and it will match up two playoff teams from a season ago. The Hounds picked up a 4-1 win over Miami in the teams’ most recent meeting, July 9, 2022 in Pittsburgh. The game will also be just the third Friday night Hounds game at Highmark Stadium since the start of the 2019 season.

Last season, the Hounds finished 16-9-9 in the regular season before advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. It was the team’s fifth consecutive playoff berth under head coach Bob Lilley, a streak that is the second-longest active streak among USL Championship teams and the longest in club history.

Highmark Stadium partnering with hospitality leaders Sodexo Live!

PITTSBURGH (March 18, 2022) — Highmark Stadium, the 5,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Pittsburgh’s Station Square which is home to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC of the USL Championship, today announced a new multi-year agreement with Sodexo Live! as its hospitality partner, following a competitive bid process.

The venue, overlooking the city’s downtown skyline from across the Monongahela River, offers breathtaking views and a stunning backdrop to any athletic event, concert, festival or private function. Also included in the partnership is food service and hospitality provided by Sodexo Live! at the brand new AHN Montour Health + Sports Medicine Center in Coraopolis, slated to open later this year.

Working with Sodexo Live!, the hospitality partner to many of the world’s most iconic venues, the building will double down on a best-in-class guest experience as it seeks to attract a more steady influx of events and bookings. For example, a brand-new POS system has already been installed, which will increase the throughput and get fans back to their seats quicker to enjoy the game.

Its culinarians – led by Executive Chef Sean Griffith – will curate menus and dazzling catering displays in the premium club space, creatively rooted in local ingredients from Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities from all around Allegheny County and Western Pennsylvania. There will also be a wide array of pierogis, creative takes on kielbasa, dedicated Riverhound brews in partnership with Straub Brewery and all the gameday favorites like popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream, soft drinks and more. All prepared but unused food after each game will be donated directly to local food recovery partners around the 412.

Hounds announce full USL Championship schedule for 2022

PITTSBURGH (January 12, 2022) — The full USL Championship schedule for the 2022 season was announced this afternoon, and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s 34-game slate includes some new destinations and a chance to get reacquainted with some familiar foes.

Among the highlights of the 2022 schedule are four road trips to face Western Conference opponents — the first time the Hounds have hit the Mountain or Pacific time zones since 2014 — huge summer home games against Indy Eleven, Miami FC and the Eastern Conference champ Tampa Bay Rowdies, and a late-season visit from defending league champion Orange County SC.

Once again, all USL Championship matches will be streamed via ESPN+, with the exception of those airing live on ESPN or ESPN2.

The Hounds will begin their quest for a fifth consecutive playoff berth under coach Bob Lilley with two already announced matches, at Memphis 901 FC on March 12 and against Hartford Athletic on March 19 to kick off the 10th season calling Highmark Stadium home. The team’s other match in the opening month is a March 26 trip to face USL newcomers Detroit City FC.

Moving down a balanced schedule — the Hounds do not have more than two consecutive home or away matches — the team will make first-ever trips to face FC Tulsa and the Las Vegas Lights in April.

The trip to Las Vegas on April 16 is the first of eight matches against Western Conference teams, as the Hounds also travel to face Rio Grande Valley (June 18), New Mexico (July 16) and Sacramento (Oct. 9). Coming to Highmark Stadium from the West are El Paso (May 14), Orange County (Sept. 24), San Antonio (Oct. 1) and Oakland (Oct. 15) for both teams’ regular-season finale.

The Hounds also get a pair of matches against all their traditional rivals, including fellow Old Guard club Charleston Battery (away June 11, home Aug. 31) and regular nemesis Louisville City FC (away April 30, home Sept. 10), who the Hounds did not face last year for the first time since Louisville joined the league.

Hounds introduce new Tailgate Zone prior to upcoming home games

PITTSBURGH (July 24, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC announces its new Tailgate Zone at Highmark Stadium, where fans will be able to gather before and at halftime of Hounds home matches to enjoy drinks, food and music as part of the match day festivities.

The Tailgate Zone will be located just outside of the Highmark Stadium West Gate for all remaining 2021 home matches, beginning with the team’s next match, Saturday, July 31 against Hartford Athletic. Music and entertainment will be provided by media partner Star 100.7 FM, and we are proud to have Fat Head’s, Heineken, Mighty Swell and Straub as beverage partners for the Tailgate Zone.

Beer offerings from our sponsors in the Tailgate Zone will include our Riverhounds Session Copper Amber Lager brewed locally by St. Marys, Pa.-based Straub. Other selections include Fat Head’s Sunshine Daydream IPA, Mighty Swell Cherry Lime Hard Seltzer, Heineken and Bud Light.

Food will be provided by a rotating group of Pittsburgh-owned and operated food trucks, beginning with Progression Bistro and The Sandwich Guy on July 31. Single-game tickets for 2021 season now on sale

PITTSBURGH (May 24, 2021) — Single-game tickets for the entirety of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC 2021 season are on sale as of noon today, as the Hounds will be able to welcome an increased number of fans to Highmark Stadium for all remaining matches.

With the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s lifting of capacity limits, which goes into effect June 1, Riverhounds SC will be able to welcome more guests and increase the selection of premium seating and service options on game day.

Season, partial season, flexbook and single-game tickets all are available now, with single-game tickets starting as low as $15.

Premium seating options, including our Riverside seats with in-seat food service, Party Tables and our Full-Service Suites that allow for viewing from the outdoor balcony, are also on sale for 2021 season. In addition to those is the resumption of our Group Packages and the popular Pups Club for kids and their parents to get discounted tickets.

With more seats now available, existing season and partial-season ticket holders will be able to return to their usual seats for the remainder of the 2021 season.

The Hounds return home Sunday, June 6, when they host the Austin Bold at 6 p.m., and 14 more games remain on the home schedule after that, including the July 3 matchup against the Charlotte Independence and the October playoff push with three home matches in the final four weeks (Oct. 10 vs. Tampa Bay; Oct. 23 vs. Charleston; Oct. 30 vs. Hartford).
